The Brazilian-born samba star Rogê (pronounced haw-zheh), who joins us from Los Angeles for an intimate set on Saturday, has been on something of a tear recently. Growing up in Rio, he went to the school of samba in the nightclubs of Lapa, finding mentors and learning on the street. For ten years, he held down a Sunday residency in Lapa’s flagship samba club, Carioca da Gema, before moving state-side in search of new possibilities. He had the great fortune of recording an album with Seu Jorge in 2019 — and the great misfortune of seeing it released in early 2020 just as the pandemic hit. But his star is rising lately. His translations of traditional samba into a more modern brew infused with soul, funk and reggae are finding new audiences. The Latin Grammy nominated guitarist is considered one of the most talented samba musicians of his generation.
