SON ROMPE PERA

marimba cumbia punk

Born and raised in Naucalpan, the deep outskirts of Mexico City, the Gama brothers and their band Son Rompe Pera have thrashed through all preconceived notions of what a marimba-centered band is, and have rendered the instrument inseparable from their punk ethos. Their shows have become home to the now-infamous marimba mosh pit across the globe, joining intergenerational audiences in moments of essential release and community around their hard-hitting, forward-thinking, unrelenting punk-infused cumbias. Honoring tradition; breaking it; rebuilding it again. The band can now be rightfully credited with the emergence of a now-global genre, "cumbia punk", a wildly danceable, mayhem-inducing musical fusion.

Their first US appearance was at Barbès in the Woods three years ago— they have since toured the world over, bringing the same kind of frenzy to festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury. They will close the festival on Sunday nov 24 - and rumor has it they may play a DJ set the night before.
